6th Grade Art6th grade art classes have been working with clay! They first learned the pinch technique to create clay owls. Then they used the coil building technique to create clay coil pots. They will learn about the pueblo tradition of pottery and design patterns inspired by Southwest Native American traditional pottery patterns later this week . 6th grade students also worked independently using the one point perspective technique to create their final room drawings. This week students will learn how to include value in their drawings by adding shadows, highlights and midtones. Students have began working on their Still Life Pasta Drawing project. Every student has improved their drawing skills in just 2 short weeks! 7th 8th Grade2D students began The Big Drawing Unit this week. They have been working very hard! They practiced drawing with the right side of their brain by drawing upside down. They began learning the basics of contour drawing and how to draw from observation. Students also worked on their Contour Object Drawing. Students will work on this project into next week. Students turned in their Radial Printmaking project. The results were stunning! Check Powerschool to see your students grade. 6th GradeThis week 6th grade students learned the one point perspective drawing technique. They are learning to draw a room. We practice 3 times together as a class. On Friday they worked independently using the one point perspective technique to create their room drawings. Tuesday will be the last in class work day. The final project is due Tuesday 10/17.

Students designed radial patterns using different types of lines. They printed their patterns to make duplicates of their art, which were then put together to make one radial work of art! They turned out fantastic! I was very impressed with their creativity and attention to detail. This project is officially due on Wednesday 9/27. Students also learned about how to create balance in their artwork. We talked about formal balance and informal balance and radial balance last Friday and looked at Wes Anderson film stills. Students will read a Scholastic Art magazine article on Friday. 7th 8th grade 2DI have been extremely impressed with 7th/8th graders creativity and ideas for their Identity Illustration project. 6th GradeThis year we are operating under the motto, "BE AWESOME!" Students discussed in their groups what that might look like in the art room. Below is a picture of what they came up with. 7th/8th graders began their Identity Illustration project on Friday. This project is all about them as they will use their interests as inspirations for this project. More info on this project can be found HERE. 7th/8th grade7th/8th grade students learned the 2 point perspective drawing technique last week. The learned to drawn buildings, a sidewalk and a road in perspective. This week they are putting creative touches on their work by giving their city a theme and adding color. This project is due at the end of the hour on Monday 6/5. 6th grade art6th Grade art class learned proper glazing techniques last week. They glazed their clay owls and clay pots. Their owls have been fired in the kiln and their pieces have been returned to them. Their bowls are firing in the kiln as I type! I plan to have the bowls graded and returned by early next week.
Students began weaving this week. They learned how to create a loom as well as tabby and twill weaving techniques. This will be our last project as the quarter ends next Friday. 7th/8th GradeThis week we continued our Big Drawing Unit. Students drew a still life, which is an arrangement of inanimate objects. They first looked at famous still life drawings and paintings and analyzed how the artists created space in their work. Then they practiced creating space in their own work by overlapping, using proportion and creating hierarchy (drawing what is close big and what is small far away). Students used medieval Illuminated Manuscripts as their inspiration for this project. They were very creative with how they used their art to tell something about themselves. At the end of last week the 6th grade art students began learning about the Elements of Art- line, shape, color, texture, value, and space. They read a Scholastic Art magazine article and then practiced identifying the elements in famous works of art. This week students have been learning specifically about the elements of line and shape. They learned how to use shape to create a mirror image in a work of art.
