7th/8th 3D ArtStudents have been learning about the artwork of Keith Haring. Below is a short video about the artist. Students have been creating 3D "action figures." They first created a 3D sculpture called an armature using poster board and tape. Now they are using paper mache to cover their sculpture. Next they will paint their work in any way they choose. This project takes about 3 weeks to make. We are almost almost done as students will paint next week. The last day to work on this project will be Wednesday 12/7. They are graded and in Powerschool and Schoology.
Student learned about the Elements of Art- line, shape, color, texture, value, and space. These elements will be a focus for the remainder of the quarter. This week we focused specifically on the the elements of line and shape. They learned how to use shape to create a mirror image in a work of art in the form of a Mandala. Students began watercolor painting on Thursday. The last day to work on this project will be Monday 12/5. The project is due in Schoology by 12/12.

6th Grade ArtThis year we are operating under the motto, "BE AWESOME!" Students discussed in their groups what that might look like in the art room. Students also learned Art Room Procedures. If you would like to see our classroom procedures click HERE to watch our procedure movies. 6th graders Began working on their Illustrated Name Tag. They started by brainstorming and sketching out their ideas. They will use makers and colored pencils as well construction paper collage techniques next week. Click HERE to learn more about this project. This project is due in Schoology by 11/22. 7/8 Grade Art7/8 grade students are working on their last 2D art project this week. They looked closely and discussed the painting I saw Figure 5 in Gold, by Charles Demuth. They read the poem, "The Great Figure," by William Carlos Williams which was Demuth's inspiration for his painting. Students compared Williams' poem to Demuth's imagery. They seem to really enjoy doing this! Now they will be creating their own number paintings using watercolor paints. The last day to work on this will be Monday 11/14. After that we will begin making 3D art!
MSE Art blog is back! It's been quite a while since I have written a blog post. But this year has been so awesome so far I'm bringing it back! 7/8 2D Art7th/8th grade 2D art students have rocked this quarter! The main focus has been improving their drawing skills and boy have they improved! Students first learned about contour drawing and drawing from observation. They drew their hands, blocks and shoes. Next we added the element of value to our work and students drew still life drawings of real fruits and vegetables donated by Nino Salvagio's. These last few weeks, students have been learning to use the grid drawing technique. Since it is spooky season, this week students have been drawing bones using value and white charcoal pencils. I am so incredibly proud of students positive attitudes about drawing and their progress! Next week is our last week of 2D art and students will be creating watercolor paintings. 6th ARt6th grade students have dabbled in a little bit of everything this quarter. We started with an Illustrated Name Tag project where students illustrated each letter of their name to represent something about themselves. Next they learned about symmetry in art and created mandala watercolor paintings. Students learned the one-point perspective drawing technique to draw a room. These turned out really cool! We have since transitioned to making 3D art, students have created a clay owl or monster. We plan to finish a weaving project before then end of the quarter next week. We have had so much fun this quarter!

Last week students began learning about the Pop Art Movement. They looked at the works of Andy Warhol, Wayne Theibaud, Roy Lichtenstein, and Robert Indiana. A focus was placed on Robert Indiana's Love sculpture. I read students a description of this sculpture and they did a drawing of what they visualized. It was fun to see how different each drawing was! This was followed by reading and short video about the artist. Students have created an armature out of poster board. Next they they used 3 layers of paper mache to cover their armature. Finally they are painting their letters. All letters must be completed in class by Tuesday 11/26. Click HERE to learn more about this project. It was a great week!The big news this week was that all class visited the Detroit Institute of Arts on Tuesday! We had a blast! The students were excellent! They did an awesome job representing Middle School East! I'm very proud of them! Not only did students have the opportunity so see famous artwork from around the world but they also viewed the Offrendas exhibit which celebrates the Mexican Day of the Dead. 7th and 8th grader did some drawing in the galleries and the 6th graders discussed the Native American Art. Be sure to ask your student about their trip!
6th grade6th grade art classes have been working with clay! They first learned the pinch technique to create clay monsters. Then they used the coil building technique to create clay coil pots. Click HERE to learn more about these projects. 7/8 grade 2D art students have been practicing drawing facial features this week. They first learned the basics of drawing the nose, lips and eyes. Then they learned how to draw their own facial features using a grid. This has been challenging for students but they have done an outstanding job! I'm so proud of them! Next week they will put it all together and draw their own self portrait.
7h/8th 2d 7th and 8th grade 2D art students have been drawing from observation. This week they did a still life drawing. A still life is an arrangement of inanimate objects. Students started by drawing the contour of the objects and then added value. 6th artThis week in sixth grade art students worked on their perspective room drawings. At the end of the week students began the clay unit. They created clay monsters. They did an excellent job using art supplies safely and responsibly.
7th/8th 2d Art
7th and 8th grade 2D Art students continued to work on their zentagle drawings this week. We also continued discussing ways to handle stress. Last week students tried meditation and this week they tried yoga. Below is the video I used with students. I was very proud of students for putting themselves out of their comfort zone for the sake of their art!
A goal with our zentagles was to create balance in their artwork using the elements of line and color. Please see awesome examples below! The last day to work on their zentangle drawings will be Monday. This project is officially due 10/8 6th art
6th graders have been learning to create mirror images in their artwork. They looked at the artwork of Peter Max and read about how he uses color in his work.
Student got to use watercolor paint when adding color to their mirror images. Powerschool is up to date. Be sure check your students grade on Tuesday for midmarking. 7/8 2d ArtSo far in the art room students learned to use their art to say something! We were learning about visual communication. 7th and 8th graders created identity collages all about themselves. Thursday was the last day to work on this project in class. This project is officially due on Thursday October 26th. At the end of this week students started learning about Zentangles. Zentangles are simply doodles that have a meditative effect.
