2nd Quarter Art students have hit the ground running, jumping right into making outstanding works of art! 7th/8th Graders began making their clay Egyptian canopic jars. These are vessels that the ancient Egyptians would store organs in as part of the mummification process. The students used the coil building techniques to create their jar and will be using pinch and modeling techniques to create their head, or top of jar. The wet due date for this project is Tuesday 11/22. It is important that students meet this due date as the pottery will need to dry over break so I can fire them in the kiln when we return. 6th Graders began the quarter by making illustrated name tags. The students made a name tag where each letter of their name illustrated something about them. This is a great way for me to get know my students and for the students to get to know each other. The name tags are on display in the showcases at East. Last week 6th grade students learned about the elements of art. Students first read an a Scholastic Art magazine article about the elements of art. Next, they were asked to look at different works of art and identify which elements of art stood out the most. The students really impressed me with their ability to not only recognize the elements but how they were able to support their answers by referencing what they saw in the works of art.
